Don’t Mess With This Bride…

…because she knows how to shoot a gun!

Ok, this is a totally non-wedding-related post, but I wanted to share some of the pictures from this weekend with you.  I had the opportunity to go to a shooting range with my friend Jason, his girlfriend, and his dad, to learn how to shoot a gun.

You may be thinking to yourself, “What the hell?!”, but this has always been something that I wanted to try.  My favorite tv shows are always cop and spy dramas—Fringe, Alias, Law & Order: SVU, etc.—so to have the opportunity to be like Jodie Foster as FBI agent Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs (another of my favorites) and shoot a gun at the range was a really neat experience for me!

Jason’s dad, Jeff, is a certified gun instructor, so the first thing he did was give us a crash course in gun safety.  We learned all about proper grip, the parts of the gun, gun safety rules, how to safely load and unload a gun, and more.  It really made me feel good to know we were learning the correct and SAFE way to do things.  Then, we got to shoot!

Jeff loaded and unloaded all the guns for us and stood by us each time we shot to give us tips and pointers.  As it turns out, I actually have a knack for shooting!  Jeff said I had really good technique.

A few of the guns we had the opportunity to shoot:  a 22-caliber pistol (my favorite—small ammo and easy to use), a 9mm Glock 17, a 45-caliber handgun, an assault rifle, a World War II sub-machine gun and AN UZI!  My favorite was the pistol (as mentioned), and the Uzi.  Here’s some pictures—the pistol shot is the first one in this post.

One of the coolest things for me was learning the proper way to grip a gun.  Now when I watch TV, I can tell which actors have been taught the correct way and which ones have no idea (tip:  if they have their finger on the trigger while they are chasing after suspects or doing pretty much anything, they haven’t been taught the proper way to hold a gun!).  Sorry, Lost fans—they all have no idea how to hold a gun!  I am happy to report, though, that all my favorite TV cops know how to hold their guns correctly.

This was a really neat experience for me and I can see how going to a range would be a great stress-reliever, especially during wedding planning.  It was really exhilarating, actually!  I can’t wait to go with Jason and Jeff again sometime.

Have you had any out-of-this-world experiences lately?  What are some new things you want to try?

  1. While we were on our honeymoon, I got to go snorkeling over to the barrier reef. It was a really cool opportunity and I’m really glad I got the chance to do it.

I took a jump off the 30 foot cliff at Rick’s Cafe! Talk about a rush!

Glad to hear you went shooting, it is a great stress reliever and you feel so empowered!

  3. That is so cool…I will now be watching for proper technique on all my favorite shows!

You look so pro in those pictures! We definitely have to get out there some more this summer. Toot toot!
